Bump Proof Locks!

Many security minded people these days are acquiring bump proof locks for their home’s exterior doors. These type of deadbolt locks prevent criminals from entering their homes using an extremely easy & widespread lock picking technique known as “lock bumping”.

If you are not familiar with lock bumping, it is a very simple lock picking technique that compromises conventional pin tumbler locks by using a specially cut key called a “bump key”.

This key is inserted into an entry or deadbolt lock & the back of the key is slightly taped bumping the pins in the lock just above the locks shear line.

The pins are only above the shear line for a split second, but buy continuously applying a light rotational force to the key when this happens, the cylinder in the lock will turn unlocking the door.

Bump proof locks cannot be opened with a bump key, but unfortunately the exterior doors in most homes are not being secured with them.

Bump keys have been around for almost 50 years, but they were just generally used by locksmiths & a small percentage of criminals that were able to obtain them.

The number of criminals that have been able to acquire these keys over the past several years has grown substantially. This is due to a number of web sites that have been selling these bump keys along with instructions on how to use them.

Although with tens of thousands of these bump keys being sold in recent years, instructions on how to use them no longer seem necessary, as there are now hundreds of how to videos on Youtube.com alone.

Showing someone how to use a bump key is all that is needed, as unlocking a door with one of these keys does not require any type of training or skill.

Although in viewing several of these how to videos, it appears with a little practice many criminals should have little problem opening a deadbolt lock on one's home almost as fast as most people can using the locks key.

Some of these instructional videos will also show you that without bump proof locks securing the entrance doors in your home, a child could easily open all of your exterior door locks using a bump key.

A few locksmiths interviewed on TV news updates that have been warning the public about this security problem, have stated that over 90% of all deadbolt locks across North America can be opened with a bump key.

This basically means that there are thousands of criminals walking around with master keys to 9 out of every 10 homes.

The following three facts explains what made it possible for lock bumping to quickly grow into such a widespread & serious security threat in a relatively short period of time:

  1. Tens of thousands of bump keys have been sold online over the past several years with more being purchased each & every day. This is likely a small percentage of the number of bump keys that are out there, as the keys that criminals purchase can easily be copied multiple times.

  2. Locking bumping is an incredibly simple lock picking technique that can be performed by almost anyone without any training or skill.

  3. Due to the large majority of homes not being secured with bump proof locks, this has allowed lock bumping to become the entry method of choice for many criminals that break-in to people’s homes.

Many Keyless Locks Do Not Have Bump Proof Lock Cylinders!

Electronic, biometric (fingerprint) & RF (Radio Frequency) deadbolt locks have been a very popular purchase with residential consumers in recent years.

You will find most of these locks come with key cylinders, as they are likely designed this way so they can be opened with a key in the event a locks keyless function fails to operate.

Unfortunately the large majority of these deadbolt key cylinders are like most other mechanical locks & can easily be opened with a bump key.

There is a small percentage of keyless locks that do have bump proof lock cylinders & you will also find some that have been produced without key cylinders in them.

Informing As Many People As Possible About This Rapidly Growing Security Problem!

It is important for the media, web sites on home security, & people in general to warn their friends & neighbors of the seriousness of this lock bumping threat.

People need to be made aware of this security issue & the importance of securing their entrance doors with bump proof locks. The more people that are informed the better, as this will reduce the number of individuals & families that will be blindsided & victimized by this widespread security problem.

You will always find individuals with a complacent attitude when it comes to home security, but most people will act responsibly & take what actions are necessary to better protect their homes & families.

For the past 4 or 5 years there has been many TV news programs in the US & Canada that have been warning the public about this growing security threat.

If you have not had an opportunity to view any of these news bulletins, you can replay a news update below from Action News 5 in Memphis. You can also replay another news update on my lock bumping web page from CBS Channel 5 News in San Francisco.

ANSI Grade 1 Deadbolt Locks Retail For As Low As $30!

Most bump proof deadbolt locks appear to be retailed in the $80 to $150 price range, but below you will find there are high quality bump proof locks that are much more affordably priced.

In addition to being bump proof, deadbolt locks need to be durable enough to withstand the level of force that an intruder may impact against an entrance door when breaking in.

Prior to this lock bumping problem, the most highly recommended locks for a home’s exterior doors were deadbolt locks that were ANSI Grade 1 certified.

ANSI Grade 2 locks that has the deadbolt extending out from the edge of the door by at least 1 inch was also considered to be a good quality lock for residential exterior doors.

ANSI (American National Standards Institute) is well recognized around the world for testing & grading deadbolt locks for quality & durability.

These locks are put through a series of rigorous tests & those that meet or pass their highest criteria for quality & durability are Grade 1 certified which is a commercial rating.

Even though these locks are rated for commercial use, they are also widely used to secure residential exterior doors.

Due to this lock bumping security threat, the only ANSI Grade 1 deadbolt locks that most locksmiths & security professionals recommend today are ones that have also been certified as being bump proof.

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) are also well known & widely accepted for putting deadbolt locks through a series of lock picking tests including lock bumping.

Acquiring good quality bump proof locks for the entrance doors in your home is very important. Having deadbolt locks evaluated & graded by independent organizations like ANSI & UL is very beneficial for consumers, as it informs us to the type of quality a lock really has.

Weiser & Kwikset lock manufacturers are owned by the Black & Decker Corporation & they both produce deadbolt locks with what these companies call smart key technology.

These deadbolt locks are ANSI Grade 1 certified & have also passed UL series of lock picking test including lock bumping (UL 437, Paragraph 11.6).

These high quality deadbolt locks are the most reasonably priced bump proof locks that are available in today’s market.

It is also due to this smart key technology that these deadbolt locks have a very unique security feature that no other lock provides.

Without having to remove the lock cylinder from the door, a simple 3 step process allows you to rekey the lock yourself in less than 15 seconds.

This unique feature can prevent your door security from being compromised by someone making an unauthorized copy of your house key.

Many times we lend our house key to someone who we consider to be very trustworthy, but we unfortunately have no idea who may have access to the key when it is in someone else’s possession.

If you ever need to loan your door key to someone like a house sitter, maid or service person, you can quickly rekey your lock before doing so & then simply rekey it back to the original when they no longer need it.

To acquire a clearer understanding of this unique security feature, you can view a short video below that demonstrates the 3 simple steps required for re-keying a smart key deadbolt lock.

A patented side locking bar that is used in all smart key locks is the reason these high quality deadbolt locks cannot be opened with a bump key. This patented side locking bar replaces the traditional pin & tumbler design that makes the large majority of deadbolt locks highly susceptible to lock bumping.

You will find many of these smart key bump proof locks are being retailed for around $30 on Amazon.com. I have placed a link below where you can view all of the smart key locks that Amazon.com has to offer.

Bump Proof Locks Alone Will Not Provide the Level of Door Security Your Home & Family Needs!

The physical security of most residential exterior doors is not effective enough to withstand the level of force that criminals will impact against them.

This is why the statistical data from the FBI & most other law-enforcement agencies have always showed that in the large majority of residential break-ins, the intruder gains entry thru one of the home’s exterior doors.

If the exterior doors in your home are not physically secure, bump proof locks will not prevent a criminal from opening them by using physical force.

Just like securing each entrance door with a high level of physical security is no longer effective, if some would-be intruder can easily gain entry with a $2 bump key.

With the entrance doors in our homes being the entry point of choice for most criminals, installing bump proof locks & increasing the physical security of our exterior doors is essential for keeping our homes & families safe & secure.

A good secure entrance door will cause most would-be intruders to quickly move on in search for an easier home to target.

They simply will not risk the time & energy that’s needed to break-in to a secure home when there are so many other residences they can enter using little or no effort.

To know what security weak-points exists with most residential exterior doors & to discover what the most practical & cost-effective security measures that can be taken to eliminate such weaknesses, please visit my door security web page.
