Home Security Systems

There are many quality home security systems being retailed today that can play an important & essential role in safeguarding & protecting our homes & families against unlawful intrusions.

Understand the pros & cons of the various security systems that are available in today’s market is incredibly important for anyone wanting to choose an effective & reliable alarm system.

If you are looking at acquiring a home alarm, but your understanding & experience with them is somewhat limited, you should find the information outlined on this web page to be very beneficial for you.

The knowledge & insight you will receive from the information below should enable you to make an informed decision in selecting the type of alarm system that will work best for you.

People do not always receive the independent security information & advice they need for making a knowledgeable decision, as most retailers & monitoring companies favor specific types of alarm systems that they carry.

Why Many Home Security Systems Are Not Providing The Security Protection That’s Needed!

A home security systems main purpose is to provide an effective & reliable level of alarm coverage to the perimeter of one’s home.

There are unfortunately many people in today’s society whose alarm coverage falls far short of meeting this important security objective.

This inadequate alarm coverage is mainly due to many poorly designed & even high quality alarm systems that are being improperly setup in people’s homes.

Many people do not realize that certain security protocols need to be followed in setting up their alarm systems & that failure to do so significantly diminishes the level of security their systems provide.

The following information will not only help you avoid the same mistakes made by so many others, it will also clarify the type of home security system that can effectively address your security needs.

Control Panels

In any hardwired, hybrid or wireless home security system the control panel is the central processing unit, the brain of the alarm system. One of the most important security protocols for setting up a home alarm is to ensure the systems control panel is located in a hidden out of the way area so an intruder is unable to gain access to it quickly & easily.

While the reliability of how most wireless systems function & operate has greatly improved over the past decade, the large majority of them are also poorly designed due to the way they are being inexpensively produced.

Manufactures economically produce these systems by housing the control panel, keypad & interior siren all in the one unit. Most monitoring companies & those who install their own alarm systems locate these all-in-one units just inside the home’s main entrance.

This is so the keypad can be used to arm & disarm the system & it allows the alarm/siren to be heard.

One of the biggest problems with this all-in-one design is the systems control panel is located out in the open as well since it is also housed in the same unit.

When an intruder breaks in thru the main door in one’s home he/she obtains the same entry delay time as the home’s occupants receive to disarm the alarm system.

With the wireless control panel just inside a home’s main entrance, criminals find it extremely easy to locate & disable it long before the entry delay time is up. Disabling the control panel defeats the alarm coverage throughout the home & prevents the alarm signal from being transmitted to the monitoring station.

Over the past several years more & more criminals have become fully aware of these poorly designed wireless alarms along with what monitoring companies are using & locating them just inside their customer’s main entrance. This has caused criminals everywhere to take advantage of this security weakness.

In just the past three or four years alone there has been a big increase in the number of criminals breaking in to people’s homes & quickly disabling these all-in-one wireless units. This type of break in is widely referred to as a crash & smash attack.

The crash & smash reference comes from many criminals kicking open the entry delay door in people’s homes & then immediately smashing the control panel.

To help reduce the number of criminals carrying out these crash & smash attacks, an innovated security company known as alarm.com has created a new technology they call “Crash & Smash Protection”.

This new technology is offered to consumers by a growing number of monitoring companies. If an intruder is able to completely disable your systems control panel, crash & smash protection helps ensure your alarm signal reaches the monitoring station.

To understand the pros & cons of this new technology & what I believe to be the best long-term solution for preventing these types of break-ins, please visit my crash and smash attack web page.

If you require the alarm coverage in your home to be wireless, your best & most beneficial option is to acquire a hybrid home security system. Many people choose a hybrid alarm for their wireless needs because the design & configuration of these systems have not been compromised in any way.

The three main components in a hybrid system are all housed in separate units allowing you to protect the control panel by locating it in a hidden out of the way area.

While a hybrid security system supports a combination of hardwired & wireless components & detection devices, you have the option of installing wireless alarm sensors throughout your home.

Hybrid home security systems are also a good option for a complete hardwired setup.

Hard-wiring a security systems alarm components & detection sensors is normally something people choose to do when building a new home or renovating an existing one.

A complete hardwired setup is certainly much easier to achieve during the construction phase when new electrical wiring is run.

Most hardwired home security systems can be transformed into a hybrid alarm by adding one or more wireless zone expanders to the system.

With most quality alarm systems today having the potential of remaining fully functional for the next 15 to 20 years, people can expand or upgrade their alarm coverage if needed in the future with wireless components & sensors.

This is a very beneficial option to have, as once the construction or renovation phase of a home is completed, people can avoid having alarm wires fished through the walls, floors & ceilings of their finished home.

Motion Sensors

One of the biggest causes for inadequate alarm coverage in people’s homes is due to an interior alarm sensor being widely used as a perimeter detection device. Some do it yourself installers & many monitoring companies use motion sensors (an interior backup sensor only) to protect most entry points in a home.

Monitoring companies use them to keep their installation costs down & their alarm packages & monthly monitoring fees competitively priced, while various individuals who install their own systems do so to save money.

It is generally a lot less expensive to install a couple of motion sensors then it is to purchase & install magnetic switch sensors for each assessable window in one’s home.

There are two reasons why this cost saving measure significantly weakens the level of security a home alarm system needs to provide.

The first problem with using motion sensors is a criminal will have to make it all the way inside the home before he/she is able to trigger the alarm system.

The second problem is the alarm coverage for the home will be almost nonexistent when the home is occupied as the motion sensors will have to be bypassed (shut down) so no family activity triggers a false alarm.

In setting up your home security system it is very important to secure all entry points into your home. The last thing you or one of your children need is to be woken up in the middle of the night & find some deranged person standing in yours or your child’s bedroom.

In addition to each exterior door, it is essential for you to install alarm sensors on all ground level windows & any windows on a higher level that can be easily reached.

It is also very important for the sounding devices used in alarm systems to be loud enough to instill fear or panic in an intruder so he/she quickly & immediately moves on.

Due to how important it is for an alarm system to achieve this security objective, UL (Underwriters Laboratories) have performed a series of tests to determine how loud an interior alarm/siren needs to be for it to be effective.

Their test results concluded that a home security systems interior sounding device should not be rated lower than 105db.

There are alarms/sirens included in many home alarm kits & can be purchased separately that are simply not loud enough to accomplish what’s needed.

This also includes these self-contained wireless systems discussed above, as the alarms/sirens built-in to these all-in-one units do not have a rating higher than 85db.

I am just speculating, but this low rating maybe a way to prevent lawsuits & permanent hearing loss, due to the height these all-in-one units need to be mounted on the wall so the keypad can be used.

While having an adequate interior alarm/siren is incredibly important, it will unfortunately not deter all criminals from entering your home.

There have been many home burglaries where an intruder sought out an activated sounding device & quickly disabled it.

You can significantly increase the level of security your home security system provides by also installing an exterior alarm/siren.

Having a loud & strident alarm sounding inside & outside your home should quickly persuade even the most determined intruders to immediately move on.

Prior to installing an exterior sounding device you may first want to see if there are any local bylaws in your area governing their use.

Most areas have bylaws in place that state how loud an exterior alarm/siren can be rated for & how long they can sound before your system needs to reset.

I sincerely hope the information on this home security systems web page was in some way helpful & beneficial for you. You may want to consider bookmarking this site as new & updated content is uploaded weekly.
